Hosting a refugee at home...

Why not?

Caritas Genève is looking for hosts willing to open their doors and welcome refugees from various nationalities for a few months or more.

The international context continues to throw many people fleeing conflict onto the road to exile. In Geneva, collective accommodation capacities are dwindling, and hosts offer a safe alternative that favors the successful integration of refugees. Refugees range from parents with children to single people, young or old, and predominantly originate from Afghanistan, Ukraine, Syria, Turkey and the Kurdish regions.

In exchange for your hosting, you will receive professional guidance and support from the Caritas Geneva team throughout the period of cohabitation, as well as a monthly financial indemnity.

We need you now more than ever!

Welcoming a refugee in your home means:

It's important to have regular follow-ups. It's a form of guarantee. We know that if there's a problem, we won't be alone.
The Pronini family, one of the first to be supported by Caritas Geneva.

What does this support consist of?

  1. The pre-visit

This support begins with a preliminary visit to your home to check the suitability of the accommodation and answer any questions you may have. Caritas Geneva social workers will help you better understand this cohabitation and help establish rules for living together. Based on the discussions you have had, your referent will be able to present you with a profile of one or more people to host, depending on the space available, your living habits, etc.

  2. The first encounter

A first encounter can be set up by your point person with the refugee you plan to host, to get to know each other better. The move will then be planned at your convenience and organized by the Caritas Geneva team. She/he will also be present on day of the move, with an interpreter if necessary. A tripartite contract will be signed between us, you and the person that will be hosted, providing a framework for this cohabitation, such as the rules that you have determined.

  3. Living together

The Caritas Geneva social worker will remain your point person throughout the cohabitation. You can contact her by phone or e-mail if you have any questions. Regular situation reviews will take place, with or without the person you are hosting, depending on your needs and requests. Your point person may also meet with the person you are hosting to pass on any additional information.
